Description

The new Tesla Roadster can drive upside down, flip in the air and launch from 0 to 60 mph in a claimed 0.81 seconds. How does it actually do it? I took it apart with animations, checked the numbers, and worked out the one Tesla never said: how long it can fly. Two machines do the work. A fan that sucks the car onto the road (or a ceiling), and cold-gas thrusters, built with SpaceX engineers, that push it with compressed air. No fuel, no fire. Chapters 0:00 0.81 seconds 0:41 What Tesla showed 1:50 The shape 2:47 Inside 3:38 The limit every car hits 4:46 The fan that holds it upside down 6:33 The thrusters 8:36 The number Tesla didn't say 9:54 Three versions 10:56 2017 vs 2026 12:24 The price, and why build it 13:30 So, what's real? What's real, what's claimed ✅ Real: the fan. Fan cars go back to the Chaparral 2J (1970) and the Brabham BT46B (1978); the McMurtry Spéirling drove upside down in 2025. Tesla showed the Roadster holding itself on an inverted ramp. ⚠️ Claimed: 0–60 mph in 0.81 s, run live on Tesla's equipment and timer. No independent test yet. 🔵 Real, but short: the flight. Our estimate is about 2 seconds at full thrust and 7–8 seconds of hover at best (assumptions on screen: a 2-tonne car, Tesla hasn't published the weight; ~600 m/s exhaust speed, typical for cold gas). Edmunds' reporter at the event says the flying car was remote-controlled, with nobody inside. ❓ Unknown: weight, battery, price of any version, street legality, and whether 2028 holds. Key numbers: Performance (2 seats, fan, by reservation) under 1.6 s; Thrust (2 seats, rear thrusters, limited) under 0.9 s; Rocket (1 seat, thrusters all around, invite only, "not approved for public road use") under 0.59 s. 600 liters / ~250 kg of air in two carbon-overwrapped tanks feeding 10 nozzles (Lars Moravy). Reservations: $5,000 + $45,000 (Performance), $5,000 + $245,000 (Thrust). In 2017 Tesla promised 620 miles, 250+ mph and 4 seats for 2020; now it's 300+ miles, 230+ mph, 2 seats, 2028.
