11:35 What This Actually Tells You
Last year the global games industry made 188 billion dollars. About 35 billion of that went to a single company most people outside Asia have never heard of. It owns pieces of League of Legends, Valorant, Fortnite, PUBG, Riot Games and Supercell, plus stakes in Spotify, Universal Music and Discord. It built almost none of it.
That company is Tencent, and it's now worth over 500 billion dollars. It didn't get there by making great games. It got there by quietly buying into more than 900 other companies over 15 years, funded by an app most Westerners have never opened.
In this video I explain how Tencent built an empire without running any of it, why leaving founders alone turned out to be a smarter strategy than Microsoft's biggest acquisitions, and why the Pentagon just put Tencent on the same list as missile manufacturers.
