In February 2026 alone, IKEA shut 7 stores in China. In five years, IKEA China has lost a third of its revenue. Guess closed every store it had on the mainland. Sephora's Chinese partner walked away after 22 years and valued its shares at zero.
And it's not only China. Walmart sold out of Japan after 18 years. Sephora opened 5 of the 14 stores it announced in South Korea, then left. Starbucks watched its share of China's coffee market drop from 34% to 14%.
Every one of these brands leads its market back home. They came to Asia with the money and the experience to win. They still lost.
In this video I explain why Western companies keep failing in Asia. I also show what the survivors did differently, a move that would get any European executive fired at home.
