Description

A state worker in Tallahassee was paid to review damage claims against the State of Florida. Investigators say Briana McCarthy, a former Risk Management Program Specialist at the Florida Department of Financial Services, approved 224 suspicious property damage claims between 2021 and 2024, worth about $1.7 million in taxpayer money. According to arrest records, nearly 80 claimants had no vehicle registered in Florida, 48 claims were approved the same day they arrived, and suspect documents were found in her desk. More than 30 people have now been charged, including 14 former state employees, McCarthy's mother and her sister. Florida's Chief Financial Officer put it this way: "If you steal from Florida taxpayers, you will go to jail." So how did one desk move that much money for three years without anyone noticing? In this video: How Florida's Division of Risk Management pays claims, and why one specialist was the only gate The red flags in the arrest records The arrests that reached McCarthy's own family Why most of the checks were small Two more Tallahassee cases: a former DFS employee charged in a $900K check scheme, and the $2.35 million the City of Tallahassee sent to a fake vendor What Florida's CFO says comes next Everyone charged is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
