Description
What Happens to Your Body When a Mosquito Bites You? This science documentary breaks down the anatomy of a mosquito bite. Six blades, saliva, your immune system, and the malaria parasite.
A mosquito does not have a needle. She has six separate tools folded inside a seventh, and two of them are saws. She does not stab your skin. She cuts it, beneath the scale your pain receptors can register. And the itch afterwards was never hers. It is your own immune system firing at proteins she injected to stop you scratching.
In this video we follow one mosquito bite from the outside in: How she found you from fifteen metres away, what her mouthparts do under your skin, why her saliva is built to dismantle your clotting system, and why the bump on your arm is really a counter of how many times you have been bitten. Then it goes further. The hundred malaria parasites injected not into your blood but into your skin, where they lie for hours before moving; the three-year study that found one volunteer a hundred times more attractive than anyone else; and why malaria is the strongest force of natural selection ever documented on the human genome.
Why do mosquito bites itch, and why is it worse the next day? Does scratching really make it worse, and if so, why does it feel so good? Why do mosquitoes bite some people and ignore whoever is next to them? And what does it mean that an insect has rewritten parts of human DNA?
