Description
🐛 Every month, chicken keepers haul home heavy bags of feed and hand over money to a price they don't control. But our grandparents fed whole flocks without buying a single bag.
There's an old, almost forgotten system that turns your kitchen scraps and garden waste into high-protein chicken feed, for free, all year round. Here are the 7 steps.
🪣 **The bin** — a simple plastic tote with a self-harvesting ramp inside. When the grubs are fat and ripe, they climb out on their own and drop into a bucket. No digging, ever.
🍌 **The bait & nursery** — you don't buy grubs. A little fermenting fruit invites wild black soldier flies (harmless — they don't bite or bother your kitchen), and a scrap of cardboard gives them somewhere to lay.
♻️ **The feed** — the grubs eat almost any waste, twice their weight a day: peelings, cores, weeds, even manure. A waste-disposal system and a feed factory in one.
🐔 **The payoff** — fat, protein-packed grubs your hens go into a frenzy for, giving you harder shells and darker yolks. Dry or freeze the surplus to feed right through winter.
The circle: your waste feeds the grubs, the grubs feed the hens, the hens' manure feeds the grubs. Nothing bought, nothing wasted.
Would you run a grub bin for your flock? Tell me in the comments 👇
