Description

Ask most Indo-Trinidadians where their ancestors came from and you'll hear one word: India. Not which state. Not which district. Not which village. This video shows how much more than that the science and the records can actually tell you. It covers what DNA can reveal about the Indian subcontinent: Reich et al. (Nature, 2009), which analyzed 132 individuals from 25 Indian groups and found Ancestral North Indian ancestry running from about 39% to 71%; Narasimhan et al. (Science, 2019), 523 ancient genomes tracing the arrival of steppe ancestry around 4,000 years ago; and a 2007 BMC Genetics study of 1,800 adults from nine Uttar Pradesh populations. It covers the 2019 Trinidad study by Benn Torres and the Genographic Consortium, which found South Asian mitochondrial haplogroups M10, M33 and M35, described as common in northeast India. Then it goes to the document that actually names the village: the General Registers of Indian Indentureship at the National Archives (1845–1917), which record each immigrant's name, father's name, estate, ship, and in later volumes caste and native place. It follows real traced families, including the Capildeo family's village of Mahadeva Dubey in Gorakhpur district, and the work of genealogist Shamshu Deen, who has helped over 300 Trinidadian families find relatives in Ghazipur, Azamgarh, Gorakhpur and Bihar. As always, honesty first: I did not find a published study that sequenced Indo-Trinidadian families and matched them district by district to India. DNA can place a profile on the broad map of India. It cannot name your great-great-grandfather's village. The registers can. And a surname alone proves nothing, since one register can hold hundreds of people with the same name. 🔎 Want to see what a real search turns up for your own surname? The link to our free surname lookup tool is pinned in the comments below. 🧬 For the full picture, our family research service goes directly into the surviving General Registers of Indian Indentureship, the ship records, and the documented family lines tied to your specific surname — link also pinned in the comments. Drop your surname below, and tell us whether your family has ever named a village, district or state in India.
