Description

"My real last name is Maraj. My father is half-Indian." Those are words attributed to Nicki Minaj in articles about her family. What do they mean in Trinidad, and what does the record behind them actually show? This video separates what she has said in public from what the Trinidad record can explain. It covers the word Dougla, used in Trinidad for people of mixed African and Indian descent, and the 2011 census (more than 22% multiracial, nearly 8% Dougla); the arrival of the Fath al Razack on May 30, 1845, and the roughly 144,000 to 147,600 Indians brought to Trinidad until 1917; where the indentured workers came from in India; and the surname Maraj, a form of Maharaj, which began as an honorific added to a Hindu priest's name and was recorded as a surname by colonial officials. Then it turns to the DNA studies on Trinidad: Gates in The Root (2016), the 23andMe Afro-Caribbean update (2023), Moreno-Estrada et al. (2013), Benn Torres et al. (2019), Reich et al. (Nature, 2009) and Castrì et al. (2007). Important note, stated directly in the video: I did not find any DNA test, genealogy report or family-records study of Nicki Minaj that has been published, so nothing here is a "finally revealed" result. The quotes about her father come from two articles that do not give a confirmed date or place for the interview, and the "one quarter" figure is a blogger's arithmetic, not hers. A person's measured ancestry can come out higher or lower than the family tree predicts. This channel does not trace the records of living people's families, so the video stays with her public statements. The Dougla share comes from census self-identification, not DNA. The Melanesian explanation comes from a magazine article. A shared surname does not make people relatives. Records can tell your own family's story. 🔎 Want to find your family's story?
