Description
On May 5, 1838, a ship landed in British Guiana with about 396 Indian immigrants. On May 30, 1845, the Fath al Razack reached Trinidad with 217 more. Two ships, two colonies, a seven-year gap. Since then, two communities have lived with a question people on both sides still argue about: are they really different from each other?
This video puts the real numbers side by side. It covers the scale of indenture (roughly 240,000 Indians brought to British Guiana and about 144,000 to Trinidad); the regions of India they came from, mostly the Gangetic plain and mostly through Calcutta; the 2012 Guyana census (297,493 Indo-Guyanese, 39.8% of the population) and the 2011 Trinidad census (about 35.4%); religion; the voyage and the terms of indenture; the disputed return rates; and two moments of resistance, the Hosay massacre in San Fernando on October 30, 1884, and the Rose Hall shooting in Berbice on March 13, 1913, where 15 workers were killed and the Guyanese government lists each of their names and ages. Then it turns to DNA, using Reich et al. (Nature, 2009), Narasimhan et al. (Science, 2019), the 2007 Castrì et al. study of an indentured-descendant community in Costa Rica, and the 2019 Benn Torres study in Trinidad.
As always: honesty first. I did not find any DNA study of Indo-Guyanese, and no study that compares Indo-Trinidadians and Indo-Guyanese, so the DNA question has no published answer. The idea that the two groups look alike in South Asian ancestry is a hypothesis drawn from the origin records, not a result. The Guyana origin percentages come from a single 2001 source. Return rates conflict between sources (about 31% for Guyana, about 20% for Trinidad, and under 10% in a third source). The Hosay death toll is also disputed (22, 12 or 9). The Guyana religion figures cover the whole population, so they cannot be compared. The point about mixing with Amerindians is my inference from census figures. A percentage cannot name your village or ship. The records can.
