Description

On October 30, 1884, in San Fernando, Trinidad, a crowd of Indian men, women and children walked toward a town they had been told not to enter, carrying handmade tadjahs. A magistrate read the Riot Act. Police opened fire. By the most cited count, 22 people were killed and about 120 wounded. The British called it the Hosay Riots. The Indians called it the Muharram Massacre. This video tells the documented story behind it: the arrival of the Fath al Razack on May 30, 1845; the roughly 147,600 Indians brought to Trinidad until the last ship, the S.S. Ganges, in 1917; the rules that bound a worker to an estate; the petition led by Sookhoo and 31 others against the ban on Hosay processions entering San Fernando; the march anyway; and the shots at Cipero Street and Mon Repos. Then it turns to the question in the title. Where did these families come from in India? The indenture registers point mostly to the United Provinces, Oudh and Bihar. DNA studies add a layer: Reich et al. (Nature, 2009), Narasimhan et al. (Science, 2019), a 2007 study of Uttar Pradesh populations, and the 2019 Trinidad study by Benn Torres that found South Asian lineages M10, M33 and M35. As always: honesty first. The death toll is disputed (22 according to Mohapatra, 9 according to Anthony), and some details come from secondary sources. I could not read the text of the 1884 ordinance itself. And I did not find any study that sequenced the descendants of the Hosay marchers, or matched Indo-Trinidadian families district by district to India. DNA can place a profile on the broad map of India. It cannot name your great-great-grandfather's village. The General Registers of Indian Indentureship can. 🔎 Want to see what a real search turns up for your own surname?
