Description
On January 26, 2024, the Houthis fired an anti-ship ballistic missile toward the U.S. Navy destroyer USS Carney in the Gulf of Aden — and Carney shot it down.
Against missiles like it, said Carney's captain, Cmdr. Jeremy Robertson, an engagement lasted 9 to 20 seconds, start to finish. Three things had to be confirmed: the missile was inbound, it was within range of Carney's weapons, and no one was left out on deck.
Vice Adm. Brad Cooper said such missiles flew at about Mach 5, and that no one before the Houthis had fired anti-ship ballistic missiles at shipping. By our own calculation, a missile like that covers 60 to 70 miles in a minute or so; a Shahed-type drone needs more than half an hour.
The computers worked out a missile's path very fast, the captain said — but humans had to push the buttons.
The whole deployment — the first fight, the Gulf of Aden, the burning tanker and the count that came after — is in the main film (about 11 minutes): [main film link — added after upload]
