Who would win in a fight between a silverback gorilla and a neanderthal? Watch to the end to find out :)
This video explores who would win in a fight between a gorilla and neanderthal using actual science. Two different verdicts are given. One scenario where a silverback gorilla and neanderthal fight bare-handed, and the other option where the neanderthal fights the gorilla with a spear.
Neanderthal:
When most people picture a Neanderthal, they think of some goofy, hunched-over caveman from a cartoon. But, we need to erase that image right now. We are talking about a battle-hardened, 5-foot-6, 170-pound Ice Age apex hominin. They weren't out here sipping cold brew; their daily 9-to-5 consisted of surviving sub-zero European winters, fighting off cave lions, and dragging massive carcasses across the frozen tundra.
If you think neanderthals were built similarly to a modern human, you are wrong. If our modern human ancestors were built to be marathon runners, the neanderthal was built like a powerlifter. They sported shorter limbs, a wider pelvis, and incredibly thick joints, giving them insane leverage and stability for grappling. And on top of that, their cortical bone— which is the hard outer layer of the skeleton—was much thicker than ours. Basically, their bones were more robust and able to absorb massive blunt force. They were essentially evolved to be prehistoric wrestlers.
And with that, they had one massive biological advantage over any great ape: their gas tank. That massive barrel chest housed enormous lungs, which evolved specifically to warm freezing Ice Age air and rapidly pump oxygen into their dense muscles.
Silverback gorilla stats:
Let’s clear something up right away: gorillas can't bench press 1,800 pounds. That’s made-up BS. No scientist has tested their lifting strength. If you actually look at a gorilla’s anatomy, Their muscle structure is biologically engineered for functional pulling, climbing, and dragging, NOT pushing. Basically, their body screams back day at the gym. But don't get it twisted—their functional strength is terrifying. Gorillas have been shown casually lifting massive logs off the ground, doing these weird pull up thing with ease, and snapping banana trees with little effort, which is something that takes a professional human fighter multiple kicks to do.
But enough of all that, so, how big is the animal the Neanderthal is stepping up to? Well, it depends on which ones we are talking about. Most gorillas you see in zoos are Western lowland silverbacks, hovering around 310 pounds and standing about 5.6 feet tall. But the real Hulk-mode ones are the Eastern lowland gorillas, with mature males found to average around 373 lbs pound range, with the ones on the larger end being around that 400 lb range.
So yeah, right now we’re looking at the silverback being roughly double the weight of a Neanderthal. And if you thought the Neanderthal’s bones were thick, the gorilla’s skeletal structure is a lot denser and takes it to a whole different level.
A gorilla’s skull is a whole lot thicker than the hominids', but the real nightmare is how that head connects to the body. Because gorillas are knuckle-walkers, their spine connects further back on the skull, supported by a neck so thick and muscular it acts as a shock absorber. So unlike us humans and the Neanderthal, whose head can easily snap back from a strike to the face, a gorilla's head is practically bolted to its torso. A bare-knuckle punch to the face simply isn't snapping that head back.
But before you write the Neanderthal's obituary, the gorilla has 3 biological flaws that could even it out here. First is the gas tank. Gorillas are fast-twitch, explosive animals. They will go absolutely berserk for about a minute, but after that, they are completely gassed out. The Neanderthal’s wrestler cardio will outlast it if he’s not put out quickly.
On top of that, the gorilla's grounded anatomy is a double-edged sword. Basically, because they knuckle-walk and use their arms as walking pillars, they have great stability. But that rigid lower spine makes them incredibly stiff and entirely forward-driven. They have terrible fine motor skills, making them horrible at isolating specific movements like a bicep curl. Translation? The bipedal Neanderthal brings elite, human-like dexterity to the fight. We're talking nimble footwork, precise muscle control, and the ability to pivot laterally and manipulate joints in ways a stiff ape physically can't.
And finally, the gorilla has standard anthropoid flesh. Just like neanderthals and us, gorillas have easily rippable skin and zero natural armor. They bleed easily, making them incredibly vulnerable to piercing damage, which is going to be extremely relevant when a pointy spearhead enters the chat.
