Stop believing the hyped myth that a Chimpanzee's strength is 5 times stronger than that of a human.
And apparently, we need to have a serious medical intervention about your primate obsession right now. Because when an MMA fighter went viral for claiming he could beat a chimp, the internet unanimously diagnosed him with sudden death.
Interesting diagnosis. And what exactly are we basing that on? Because every time this conversation happens, nobody brings me anatomy. Nobody brings muscle architecture, biomechanics, or body mass. They bring me a photograph of a hairless chimp, reference the tragic Travis the chimp story, and then act as if they’ve just completed a PhD.
Now, the fighter just publicly backed out, admitted it was a stunt, and told everyone to donate to primate conservation instead. Which is great for the chimps and we should protect them, but it doesn't cure the underlying brain damage of the people who confidently bet their paycheck on the ape.
The interesting question is what happens when the human isn't average. What happens when the chimp is dealing with a combat athlete who has spent years learning how to generate force, absorb trauma, and completely manipulate another skeleton? (Chimpanzee vs MMA fighter)
Well, sit down pay attention because this entire delusion starts with a single symptom: the visual.
I bet you’ve all seen the viral photos of a hairless chimpanzee. It looks like it skipped the zoo enclosure and went straight to Mr. Olympia. It looks like a five-foot felony. I get it. And let’s give the animal its respect. Their upper body is absurd. It is doing a job your upper body quit doing millions of years ago: swinging from trees and knuckle-walking.
But you are diagnosing the patient with primate eyes. That physique is an illusion created by extremely low body fat and the fact that a chimp’s forelimbs are literally load-bearing structures. Anthropologists use something called the intermembral index, which compares arm length to leg length. A male human sits around 70. A male chimpanzee is around 108. Their arms are proportionally enormous compared to their legs, because their arms are literally being used as walking sticks. So no crap they look shredded; nature built a biological coat-hanger optimized for hanging from branches. You don’t want 30 pounds of fat jiggling around for that.
But your caveman brain thinks ‘low fat animal equals invincible power’. So I constantly hear, "Chimps are five times stronger than humans!"
Shut up. No, they aren't. That statistic comes from a guy named John E. Bauman in the 1920s who completely butchered his own strength test. He couldn’t get the apes to cooperate with his equipment, so he pissed off a former circus chimp, let it plant both feet against the iron cage bars, and recorded it heaving backward with its entire body weight in a psychotic rage.
When modern biologists actually tested their dynamic strength output—specifically the 2017 O'Neill study—they found that a chimpanzee’s upper body muscle is only about 1.35 times more powerful than a human's, pound-for-pound.
Emphasis on pound-for-pound. Which brings us to the absolute size problem. Your average wild male chimpanzee only weighs between 88 and 132 pounds, and stands about five feet tall when upright. Do you know what a 120-pound chimp's equivalent strength output looks like? A welterweight fighter.
Let’s look at how these animals actually use their muscle, since nobody else will.
A chimp's arms are literal walking sticks—they need stiff, rigid joints just so they don’t faceplant every time they step on a pebble.
Humans did the exact opposite. We have short in-levers. We traded ape-pulling power for blistering rotational velocity. And a chimp’s ability to strike and throw? It’s pathetic. I could quote the 2013 Nature paper on kinetic chains, but I’ll save you the migraine. The translation is that Humans are biological catapults. We evolved elastic tendons in our shoulders and limb joints that act like twisted rubber bands. We can cock our arm back, load that elastic energy, and strike with at insane speeds and precision. Chimps can’t do that because they are stiff.
But every single chimp conversation eventually becomes the Travis the Chimp conversation.
Use your brain. Charla Nash was a 55-year-old civilian suddenly attacked by a 200-pound, morbidly obese, captive animal she trusted. Mauling an unsuspecting, untrained senior citizen does not mean you possess an unbeatable one-on-one combat system against a professional fighter who literally breaks people's bones for a paycheck.
Look at the medical reports. Where do chimps actually aim? They bite fingers, hands, forearms, ears, and genitals. Why? Because their targeting sucks. Because they are opportunistic cowards with terrible leverage.
So this whole MMA fighter vs chimpanzee topic or man vs chimpanzee topic is extremely misunderstood.
