This video explains exactly why the 100 men vs gorilla debate with brutal, hard science.
Gorilla stats: Most of the time, they’re giant vegetarian introverts who want food, peace, and for everyone to stop making direct eye contact with them. Seriously though, they might misinterpret your staring contest with them as a declaration of war. But a silverback is not walking around the forest looking for enemies. He’s just tryna eat enough vegetation to keep a several-hundred-pound body from going bankrupt on salad.
And that matters, because gorillas are strong, yes, but they are not predators. They don’t wake up and choose murder. They wake up and choose leaves.
Most of the gorillas people see in zoos judging you are the western lowland variants. With mature males typically in the 310-pound range, when standing upright, they are roughly 5-foot-6.
Even if we take the absolute largest gorillas—the Eastern lowland silverbacks—we’re pushing a 375-pound average, maxing out around the 400-pound range.
But it’s terrifying because of how that weight is packaged. A 300-pound human and a 300-pound gorilla are not the same object. A big human is usually stretched upward. Legs, torso, posture, bad knees, a delicate, boomstick spine, probably sleep apnea. A gorilla is compact, front-loaded, and built like evolution took a human upper body, deleted the elegance, and spent the entire budget on shoulders, back, forearms, jaw, and neck.
And the rest of the body is just as rude to your ego. The shoulders are massive. They have an 8-foot-long arm span, and the hands look like they were designed to repossess souls. Basically, their whole upper body is built around pulling, climbing, dragging, and wrestling. NOT pressing.
Which brings us to the part where the internet starts lying for no reason. Their strength. This is where Reddit-thread biology gets intertwined with actual facts, because if I have to hear one more person say a gorilla can bench press 1,800 pounds—the literal weight of a bison—I’m going to lose my mind. Where did that number come from? Seriously? No scientist has ever walked into the forest, handed a silverback a clipboard, and tested his one-rep max.
But, the bite force claims are just as messy. A 2024 dry-skull study put a gorilla’s maximum bite force at around 3,400 Newtons. Meanwhile a measly human’s bite is only 1200 newtons, while a tigers is around 3500 newtons. But does that mean a gorilla can bite like a tiger? No
A gorilla bite is not the same as a tigers bite. You see, animals like lions or bears all have elongated snouts protruding out from their faces, which are designed to surgically bite prey and rip apart meat. But a gorilla’s mouth is pressed right against its face just like us humans. So that means it has the bite range of a HUMAN, where it has to physically shove its face right against a limb. Now, yes, those canines are still long, the jaw muscles are still huge, and if one clamps down on human tissue, you get hole-punched. But, it’s not the end-all-be-all. Especially noting that a gorilla doesn’t have predatory instinct and really doesn’t target specific areas like the neck.
And that brings us to how gorillas actually fight. Because again, people imagine a gorilla squaring up like it trained under Bruce Lee. No. A gorilla fight starts way before contact. The first phase is theater. Chest beating. Posturing. Bluff charging. Vocalizing. Branch throwing. All the things animals do when they’re trying to win the argument without paying the medical bill. It’s basically a bar fight where both guys keep yelling “hold me back” and secretly hope somebody does.
And that makes sense. When your whole diet is low-calorie plant matter and your daily life involves processing vegetation like a depressed wood chipper, wasting energy on pointless violence is bad accounting.
The second phase is when it gets physical. And let's get one thing straight:
Their actual fight IQ revolves around brutish wrestling. You see, gorillas are linear, charge-in brawlers that use their massive bulk to lunge forward and wrestle. And once they get a hold of their opponent, they just bite and drag.
And we actually have a brutal real-world hint of this. In Loango National Park, scientists observed chimpanzees attacking gorilla groups in rare but lethal encounters. These were coalition attacks. 18 chimpanzees jumped a gorilla family. The silverback tossed a few chimps around, sure. But eventually? The sheer numbers and chaos overwhelmed him. He was chased off by nine chimps, or else he would’ve been brutally delivered to the afterlife. The lesson is that a silverback can be pressured, confused, and neutralized by a countable number on your hands.
