Description
Americans are working, budgeting, getting degrees, chasing promotions — and a growing number of them still feel like their paycheck buys less and less.
In this episode of Everyday Perspective, host Kayla looks at what wages actually mean in America in 2026.
One woman is stunned to discover how little some tipped workers can be paid. Another breaks down what a single American supposedly needs every month just to cover basic necessities. Then the conversation gets even stranger: what happens when even a six-figure salary no longer feels like the financial finish line people spent their careers chasing?
The stories keep widening.
Workers describe jobs that consume their time without helping them build savings. Younger Americans talk about delaying independence, marriage, children and homeownership. A man in Miami stands next to a $12-an-hour job while apartments around him cost thousands every month.
The numbers Kayla found make some of these stories even harder to ignore.
MIT's 2026 Living Wage Calculator estimates that a two-working-adult household with one child in Los Angeles needs roughly $120,000 before taxes just to cover basic needs.
Miami-Dade County's housing plan says roughly 63% of renters there spend more than 30% of their income on housing.
The U.S. Labor Department says cashiers spend about 93% of their workday standing.
And near the end of the episode, Kayla looks at another pressure on household budgets: Yale's Budget Lab estimated that the current tariff regime costs the average household roughly $1,100 a year.
At what point does a full-time job stop feeling like financial security?
Tell me in the comments: does your paycheck feel smaller than it did a few years ago?
