Description
A cheetah mother and a spotted hyena mother on the same Masai Mara plain in southern Kenya teach their cubs two opposite ways to survive — and one afternoon the two lessons collide. 🐆🐾
🌅 Two classrooms. The cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) teaches from a termite mound: stay unseen, choose the moment, sprint. The spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta) teaches from her den: read the sky, walk forward, never give ground.
🦌 The cheetah runs down a Thomson's gazelle fawn (Eudorcas thomsonii) and carries it back alive — survival lesson one for her cubs.
🦅 A white-backed vulture (Gyps africanus) drops out of the sky, and the hyena family reads it from two kilometres away.
⚔️ Swipes, shoulder charges and a mother twice her weight. Then the cubs meet for the first time — and the cheetah cub's swat lands clean, and nothing happens.
💡 One body length from her own kill, the cheetah stops, turns her shoulder, and chooses her cubs.
Real cheetah and spotted hyena behaviour in this episode:
A cheetah can reach about 100 km/h but only for around twenty seconds, and after the sprint it has to rest and breathe before it can feed — the moment when heavier predators arrive. Between one in ten and one in seven of the animals cheetahs catch are taken by something else, and cheetahs almost never fight back: a light skeleton and a small jaw mean an injured leg ends the hunting. Cheetah mothers bring live young prey back so their cubs can practise, and cubs wear a thick smoky-grey mantle of fur for their first months. Spotted hyenas are roughly twice a cheetah's weight, hunt for themselves far more often than people think, and read vultures in the sky faster than any other animal on the plain. Hyena cubs are born plain dark brown and inherit their mother's rank.
If you searched for cheetah vs hyena, a hyena stealing a cheetah kill, a cheetah mother defending her cubs, cheetah cubs learning to hunt, or a spotted hyena clan in the Masai Mara, this is that story.
