Hyenas vs Baboon: A Bitten Baboon Rode a Warthog to Outrun Three Hyenas

A young olive baboon bitten by a turtle, three spotted hyenas closing in on its scream, and the only way out is the back of a frightened warthog. This baboon riding warthog chase follows one young olive baboon (Papio anubis), one common warthog (Phacochoerus africanus), a clan of three spotted hyenas (Crocuta crocuta) and one African helmeted turtle (Pelomedusa subrufa) across the dry-season plains of Tarangire, Tanzania. It all starts at a drying waterhole. The young baboon wanders off from its troop, pokes a helmeted turtle, tips it over — and reaches for its head. The jaws clamp shut. The baboon's scream carries across the plain, and in the tall grass a spotted hyena lifts its head. Three hyenas fan out, the baboon bolts on three legs, and it leaps onto a digging warthog. What follows is a non-stop getaway: jaws that snap a hair behind the warthog's rump, a hyena racing ahead to block the path, a hard swerve that almost throws the passenger off, an ambush in the tall grass, a splash through a dry river bed and a dive under the acacia thorns. Then the clan falls apart, one hyena at a time. Real spotted hyena, warthog, baboon and turtle behaviour in this episode — spotted hyenas can run at about 60 km/h, respond to distress calls from far away and hunt mostly in the cool of the night; their famous giggle signals excitement; warthogs run with the tail held straight up and turn far tighter than a hyena; a baboon's bared-teeth grin is a face of fear; and the helmeted turtle folds its neck sideways and bites hard when handled.
