Description

A cheetah mother and three African wild dogs on the Serengeti plains of Tanzania — and the only way to save her two cubs is to make herself the bait. She is the fastest runner on Earth, for about twenty seconds. They can run for an hour. End of the dry season on the southern Serengeti: a cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) hides two eight-week-old cubs in a red termite mound, each with a long silver cape of fur along its back. She stalks a Thomson's gazelle (Eudorcas thomsonii), explodes from the grass — and misses. Then three African wild dogs (Lycaon pictus) arrive, run a gazelle down in a relay, and the lead dog lifts his nose toward the termite mound. The gamble: she walks into the open, hissing, and makes herself the target. The decoy run: she leads them away at half speed, swats, spins, and breaks through a gap at full acceleration. The relay: the dogs settle into a pace she cannot hold, and she makes for a granite kopje. On the rock: one swat from above and each dog slides back down the granite. The turn: two dogs break away — back toward the cubs. The cub puffs up its silver cape and spits, and over a few hundred metres nothing on Earth beats a cheetah. Real cheetah and African wild dog behaviour in this episode: Cheetahs reach around 100 km/h, but their sprint lasts only a few hundred metres before they have to stop and pant hard; the long tail swings as a counterweight in tight turns and the claws barely retract, gripping like running spikes. Mothers hide young cubs in lairs and move them every few days. Young cubs carry a long silvery mantle that biologists think may mimic the fierce honey badger. African wild dogs hunt in groups, run prey down over kilometres at around 50 km/h, take turns in the lead and finish more of their hunts than lions do; small groups of young males often leave their birth pack together. Wild dogs rest through the midday heat.
