Description

Biologists Just Found Out What Yellowstone’s Wolves Actually Are My Book: gideonmarsh.com Every black wolf in Yellowstone carries a gene that did not start in wolves at all. It started in domestic dogs, thousands of years ago, and walked into the Americas beside the first people. In this one I go through why the park has stayed almost exactly half black and half gray for decades instead of one colour taking over. Grey mothers raise litters with about 25 percent better pup survival, so grey should win, except distemper sweeps the park roughly every five years and black wolves survive it better, because that same gene builds a protein that fights infection. The part that gets me is the double black wolves, two copies of it, and they are the weakest of the lot, few live long and few raise pups. I will be honest about where I land on this, the Canadian giants story needs to die, the 1902 wolves shot near Flat Creek were about the same size as the ones there now. And the wolves pair black with grey more often than chance should allow, which means they are holding that balance themselves.
