Description
In November 2005, a small fusion machine paid for by the US Navy made fusion four times in two days, blew itself apart on the third, and was torn down with its lab before anyone had read what it did. A year later the man who built it, Robert Bussard, told a room at Google that Washington would never back it. "Not until it's running in China."
This is what happened to that machine after the money went to roadside bombs in Iraq. The equipment and the best people went to a rocket company. Bussard went public in 2006 and died in 2007. The Navy came back with smaller contracts, spent $5.3 million in 2012 on guns that fire electrons into the machine, and the final report is still under limited distribution. By 2022 the Pentagon was betting on a desk-sized fusion device meant to fly on a satellite in 2027.
Then Beijing. A patent for an electrostatic fusion machine with electron guns fitted to it, filed in December 2021, granted by the US Patent Office in February 2024 and in China in November 2025. Whether anyone there has switched one on, nobody outside has said. Bussard's own 1994 chart shows what a small machine like this could do: a whole power plant that fits in the power bay of an Arleigh Burke destroyer.
