Description

Under the altar of a working church in Mexico, the ground gives nothing back. The last men known to have gone through the door beneath it lit torches, went down into a passage lined with pillars, felt a cold wind blow their lights out, and had the way in walled shut. In 2022 and 2023 a team scanned Mitla in Oaxaca without moving a single stone. Under the Church of San Pablo, built around 1590 from the stones of the old Zapotec city, the readings came back hollow. Then they found the same emptiness under every major group of ruins in town: a shaft under one courtyard, two rooms joined by angled tunnels under a plaza, and spaces twelve metres down beneath the oldest stones in the city. This is what a 1674 friar wrote about the labyrinth under Mitla, what the instruments found where he said the way in was, and what an earthquake around 1495 did to the city before anyone built a church on it. #ancienttomb #mitla #ancientmysteries Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCcMOgmkKMJ4U6pQSB6-TffQ?sub_confirmation=1 SOURCES Project Lyobaa, 2022 season, ARX Project: https://www.arxproject.org/projectlyobaa2022 Project Lyobaa, 2023 season, ARX Project: https://www.arxproject.org/projectlyobaa2023 Mitla, ARX Project: https://www.arxproject.org/mitla INAH, Estudios geofísicos indican la posible existencia de un túnel o túneles bajo la iglesia principal de Mitla (28 July 2023): https://www.inah.gob.mx/boletines/estudios-geofisicos-indican-la-posible-existencia-de-un-tunel-o-tuneles-bajo-la-iglesia-principal-de-mitla-en-oaxaca INAH, Determinan la configuración subterránea de Mitla (21 February 2024): https://inah.gob.mx/boletines/determinan-la-configuracion-subterranea-de-mitla-la-antigua-ciudad-zapoteca-de-lyobaa-o-casa-de-tumbas INAH Bulletin 516, Mediciones de vibración ambiental apoyan hipótesis de que Mitla fue cubierta por una avalancha de origen sísmico (20 August 2024): https://inah.gob.mx/boletines/mediciones-de-vibracion-ambiental-apoyan-hipotesis-de-que-mitla-fue-cubierta-por-una-avalancha-de-origen-sismico Smithsonian Magazine, Archaeologists Discover Entrance to the Zapotec Underworld Beneath a Church in Mexico (18 July 2023): https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/zapotec-underworld-entrance-mexico-180982552/ Ancient Origins, Underground Chambers and Tunnels Confirmed at Mitla (6 September 2024): https://www.ancient-origins.net/news-history-archaeology/mitla-tunnels-confirmed-0021387 HeritageDaily, Network of subterranean chambers and tunnels identified beneath Mitla (11 October 2024): https://www.heritagedaily.com/2024/10/network-of-subterranean-chambers-and-tunnels-identified-beneath-mitla/153652 Secretaría de Cultura, San Pablo y el Calvario: https://sitiosymonumentos.cultura.gob.mx/iii-estudios-monograficos/san-pablo-y-el-calvario/ Burgoa's account of Mitla, from Geográfica Descripción (1674), via Lewis Spence, The Myths of Mexico and Peru (1914): https://uncoveredhistory.com/mexico/mitla-the-temple-of-the-underworld/ Mitla: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitla
