Description
Built to Last — my old-world household manual: https://ezrakaine.com
There's been a fire in this fireplace two hours. It was fifty-one degrees in here when I
lit it. It's fifty now.
That's not a broken fire. That's exactly what a fireplace does.
The people who built this house knew that. Knew it well enough that they stopped trying to
heat the house at all, and started heating the people standing in it. Seventeen ways to
keep a house warm without a furnace, most of them free. None of it is quaint. It's
arithmetic against a woodpile that had to last until April.
Number 12 almost everybody gets backwards — twice the wood for half the heat. Number 9
isn't insulation, whatever you've read. And number one you can't build or buy at all.
Whether it's a power outage, a heating bill you can't face, or an old farmhouse that was
never built for central heat, every one of these still works today. So pick one before the
weather turns. Hang something heavy in the doorway at the bottom of your stairs. Put
something under you in bed instead of over you. Or shut the door on a room you're not
using tonight and see what the room you're in does by morning.
Tell me in the comments which of these your family did, and what county you were in. None
of it was ever written down. It went from a grandmother to a grandchild in a cold kitchen,
and when that stopped happening, it just went. I'd rather catch some of it first.
They never heated this house. Not in a hundred years. They heated the people in it and let
the house go cold around them.
