Description

Eduard Wirths served as the chief SS physician at Auschwitz, overseeing the medical administration of the largest concentration and extermination camp established by Nazi Germany during the Second World War. Born in Germany in 1909, Wirths studied medicine before joining the SS and eventually becoming one of the most influential doctors within the camp system. His position placed him at the centre of decisions that shaped the daily operation of Auschwitz and the medical activities carried out there. As chief physician, Wirths supervised the camp's medical personnel, including doctors such as Josef Mengele, whose work at Auschwitz would later become infamous. Under Wirths' authority, prisoner selections, medical inspections, and human experimentation formed part of the camp's routine. Prisoners were subjected to a wide range of medical procedures conducted without consent, while physicians pursued research that ignored every accepted principle of medical ethics. The documentary examines Wirths' career, his role within the SS medical hierarchy, and the extent of his responsibility for the crimes committed under his authority. It explores the relationship between Wirths and other Auschwitz doctors, the functioning of the camp's medical department, and the testimony of survivors who encountered the men responsible for these policies. It also considers Wirths' own statements after the collapse of Nazi Germany, in which he attempted to explain his actions and present himself as a doctor acting according to his conscience. Drawing on historical records, survivor testimony, post-war investigations, and the latest research, this documentary explores how medicine was transformed into a tool of persecution under the Nazi regime. It examines the responsibilities of those who directed Auschwitz's medical system and the lasting historical questions surrounding individual accountability within one of history's most notorious concentration camps. Narrator: Marchand Steenkamp. Di
