Description

A county sheriff is suing his own state. That alone made this House hearing different. Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) asks him why, and the answer comes down to two words: public safety. Then the questioning turns to Cato Institute immigration policy director David Bier. Jordan reads Bier's own written testimony back to him, that people of every background benefit the United States, and tests it against figures on Somali residents of Minnesota and public assistance. Bier says he cannot confirm those numbers. His reply flips the question onto Congress: lawmakers write the eligibility rules, and they could end those benefits tomorrow. The hearing closes with the families of victims in the room and one last pointed question. Behind it all sits a bigger fight over sanctuary policies, ICE detainers, and who decides how local police work with federal agents.
