Description
T. rex is the most famous dinosaur – we all know that. But were Megalodon, Mosasaurus or Pteranodon dinosaurs too?
If you can't answer that, check out how our merch can help: https://wildsparks-shop.fourthwall.com/en-usd
Makes a great gift, too!

In this video:
Can soft tissue survive in a T. rex fossil? In 2005, Mary Schweitzer's team found flexible, vessel-like structures inside a T. rex femur. Iron compounds from broken-down blood suggested original material, though no DNA survives. That discovery pushed researchers to look again at the living animal.
Did T. rex have lips?
A 2023 study led by Thomas Cullen found its teeth sat behind scaly lips, like a Komodo dragon's. Its teeth grew up to 12 inches, or 30 centimeters, long. Lips kept them moist and protected them from cracking under an enormous bite.
What did the rest of T. rex look like?
University of Liverpool studies from 2023 and 2025 found older reconstructions were too slim. Real dinosaurs carried much more muscle than the classic artwork showed. In 2026, Adrian Boeye and colleagues found T. rex walked toe-first, like a bird. A huge olfactory bulb suggests it tracked prey by smell, much like a vulture.
How big was T. rex?
The largest confirmed specimen, Scotty, was found in Saskatchewan, Canada, in 1991. It measured about 43 feet, or 13 meters, and weighed around 19,400 pounds, or 8,800 kilograms. In 2024, Jordan Mallon of the Canadian Museum of Nature questioned whether Scotty marks the limit.
How long did T. rex take to grow up?
Growth rings once pointed to full size around age 20. In 2026, Holly Woodward's team studied 17 specimens under polarized light. It revealed growth rings that earlier researchers simply could not see.
That work also touched an 80-year fight over Nanotyrannus, a small tyrannosaur from Montana's Hell Creek. Robert Bakker named it in 1988, and Thomas Carr called it a young T. rex in 1999. Two separate teams tested the question again in 2025.
The real T. rex is stranger and more impressive than the movie monster. New estimates of how large it grew and how long it took reshape the king of the dinosaurs. So what else about T. rex are we still getting wrong?
