Description

Megalodon was the biggest predatory shark that ever lived – but did it share the seas with dinosaurs? And were Mosasaurus or Pteranodon dinosaurs at all? If you can't answer that, check out how our merch can help: https://wildsparks-shop.fourthwall.com/en-usd Makes a great gift, too! ____________________________ In this video: Megalodon was longer and leaner than we thought. Hollywood usually shows it as a scaled-up great white. But how much can we really know about a shark that left behind almost nothing but teeth? What did Megalodon really look like? A 2024 study co-authored by Kenshu Shimada found its spine too slender for a bulky great white shape. The team proposed a longer body, closer to a giant mako or lemon shark. Not every researcher agrees, and some still defend a bulkier build. How big was Megalodon? A 2025 study led by Shimada used fossil vertebrae from Belgium and Denmark. It estimated a possible maximum length of about 80 feet, or 24 meters. The same study suggests a slow cruising speed of roughly 1 to 2 mph, or 2 to 3.5 km/h. Why is there no complete Megalodon skeleton? Sharks are built from cartilage, which rarely fossilizes. Teeth are the exception, since one Megalodon may have shed tens of thousands in a lifetime. Florida's Peace River and South Carolina's Morgan River are famous spots for finding them. How old are Megalodon fossils? The video sets the conventional timeline against young-earth claims from creationist speaker Mark Harwood in a 2026 interview. He points to soft tissue in dinosaur bones, carbon-14 readings and rapid burial. Mary Schweitzer, who found soft tissue in a T. rex femur in 2005, proposed iron as a natural preservative instead. How do geologists date fossil layers? They use radioactive decay in volcanic ash trapped between layers. They also read ancient flips of Earth's magnetic field recorded in the rock. Each method works independently of how fast sediment piled up. The real Megalodon is stranger than the movie shark, and the evidence for its age tells a story of its own. So how do scientists read deep time from teeth, bone and ash?
