Description
T. rex is the most famous dinosaur – we all know that. But were Megalodon, Mosasaurus or Pteranodon dinosaurs too?
If you can't answer that, check out how our merch can help: https://wildsparks-shop.fourthwall.com/en-usd

In this video:
Dinosaur appearance is reconstructed by comparing fossil bones with living animals, a method known as comparative anatomy. Yet a penguin skeleton looks nothing like a living penguin. So what have we been getting wrong about dinosaurs, and can bones ever show the full picture?
The first dinosaur reconstructions went wrong because nobody knew dinosaurs existed. A broken Megalosaurus thigh bone was once mistaken for part of a human giant. In the 1820s, English physician Gideon Mantell matched giant fossil teeth to a living iguana and named Iguanodon. The same method later solved a much stranger puzzle.
Spinosaurus could swim, and its tail is the evidence. A tail described in 2020 carried tall spines never seen on a dinosaur before. They only made sense once researchers studied how a beaver's tail anchors its swimming muscles. Bones record muscle in other ways too.
T. rex arms were short but strong enough to curl over 400 pounds each, about 180 kilograms. Scars on the bone show where muscles attached and how large they were. The same clues rule out sauropods with elephant trunks and the old shrink-wrapped look. Sometimes, though, nothing has to be reconstructed at all.
Some dinosaurs had feathers, and fossils prove it directly. A feathered dinosaur tail was found in amber from Myanmar that is about 100 million years old. In 2007, quill knobs were reported on a Velociraptor arm bone. Whether an adult T. rex kept its feathers is a harder question.
Dinosaur color is known for only a handful of species out of roughly a thousand. Soft tissue is almost as rare. Hadrosaur mummies preserve features that leave no trace on a skeleton. Tissue reported in 2005 from a T. rex still fuels debate over how it survived millions of years. That fossil came from the Hell Creek Formation in Montana. Behavior is harder still, since herds are known mostly from sauropod footprints.
The real picture of dinosaurs turns out richer than the movie monsters, because every new find forces a correction. Two large holes on top of the T. rex skull hid a purpose that crocodiles finally revealed. Fossils from the Arctic then overturned an old belief about dinosaur body temperature. So how much of dinosaur appearance are we still getting wrong?
