Description
Sea forts were built to control stretches of water an enemy could not be allowed to cross. This video explains 13 major types of sea forts, from harbor gate defenses and Martello towers to Fort Drum, Maunsell forts, and underground coastal batteries.
The video follows how coastal fortifications evolved as artillery, warships, armor, aircraft, and guided weapons changed the problem of defending a shoreline. It covers harbor chains, headland forts, artillery castles, bastioned star forts, natural and artificial island forts, circular offshore forts, breakwater defenses, disappearing-gun batteries, armored turret forts, offshore platforms, and underground fortresses.
You’ll see why geometry mattered to star forts, why engineers built massive foundations directly on the seabed, how Fort Drum became a concrete battleship, why Maunsell forts stood on steel legs above the water, and why later coastal defenses increasingly disappeared into concrete, earth, and solid rock.
