Description
Sabbath School Lesson 2 follows one small Hebrew word through the whole Bible: hinneni, here I am. Abraham says it on Mount Moriah, Isaiah says it in the temple, and Deep Made Simple asks why almost every true prophet first tried to say no.
Moses gave God five objections at the burning bush. Jeremiah said he was too young. Amos was a shepherd who looked after sycamore figs. Jonah bought a ticket the other way. The false prophets were the ones who ran with a message nobody gave them.
Sunday starts with Abraham, the first person the Bible calls a prophet, a navi. He failed, he prayed for others, and under a sky full of stars he said amen to a promise he could not see. In Genesis 15 God alone passes between the pieces of the covenant, and on Moriah Isaac asks the question the whole Bible waits to answer: where is the lamb?
Monday goes to Mount Carmel, where Elijah asks a nation how long it will limp between two opinions, and the same Hebrew verb describes the prophets of Baal dancing around a silent altar. Tuesday is Isaiah 6, the seraphim, unclean lips, a live coal from the altar, and Isaiah 53, where the Servant is lifted as high as God's throne and crushed for our sins. Wednesday follows Daniel into Babylon and the statue of Daniel 2. Thursday is John the Baptist, the voice who pointed and said, look, the Lamb of God.
Friday asks whether the line of prophets simply ends with John. At Pentecost Peter quotes Joel: your sons and daughters will prophesy. The study names the women Scripture calls prophets, from Miriam and Deborah to Huldah, Anna and the four daughters of Philip, and shows how Isaiah 8 and 1 John 4 test every message by the Bible and by whether it keeps people looking at Jesus.
The week closes with God's own hinneni. In Isaiah 65 God says here am I, here am I, to people who never called His name, and Hebrews 10 puts the same words in the mouth of Christ coming into the world. Every faithful here am I in the Bible turns out to be an echo of His, and t
