Description
Sabbath School Lesson 3 opens with a choir marching in front of an army. King Jehoshaphat tells Judah, have faith in his prophets and you will be successful, and Deep Made Simple asks who those prophets really were, how you could tell the true ones from the false, and what they actually did all day.
The surprising answer that runs under the whole week: they were people a lot like us. James says Elijah was a human being, even as we are. Moses asked God to take his life. Miriam spoke against her own brother. Barak would not go into battle unless Deborah came with him. The Bible keeps every flaw on the record, and God speaks through them anyway.
Sunday follows Elijah from the drought and the small cloud over Carmel to the broom bush and the cave on Horeb, where God's first answer was bread and sleep. Monday is the test of Deuteronomy 18 and the day four hundred prophets told two kings what they wanted to hear, while Micaiah said, I can tell him only what the Lord tells me. Tuesday shows what prophets did with kings, priests and the people, from Samuel's warning about a king who will take, to Jeremiah weeping in the ruins.
Wednesday meets the women Scripture calls prophets: Miriam with her timbrel beside the sea, Deborah under her palm tree, and Huldah in the New Quarter of Jerusalem, whose word began the greatest reform in Judah's history. Thursday is the voices that sounded like prophets and were not: peace, peace when there is no peace, the whitewashed wall of Ezekiel 13, straw and grain, and Hananiah breaking the wooden yoke off Jeremiah's neck in the temple.
Friday brings it together with Hebrews 11, people whose weakness was turned to strength, and Peter's prophetic word, a light shining in a dark place. Then the study climbs the Mount of Transfiguration, where Moses and Elijah, the two prophets who each asked God to end their lives, stand talking with Jesus about the exodus He would accomplish at Jerusalem, and the voice from the cloud says, listen to him.
