Description
On Labour Day weekend 1975, Winnipeg tax lawyer Izzy Asper relaunched a North Dakota TV station as CKND from a former Safeway on St. Mary's Road. This video tells the full story: the Lyric Theatre in Minnedosa, bought in 1929; the four-vote win in Wolseley in 1973; the 1974 rescue of Global; his lone 1983 vote against liquidating CanWest Capital; the 2000 Southam deal worth more than $3 billion; the $4 billion debt and the October 6, 2009 filing. It ends where the story stands now — Global Winnipeg turned 50 in September 2025, and the human rights museum he announced in 2003 stands at The Forks.
