Description

Sam Belzberg opened a trust company in Edmonton in 1962; by the late 1980s, First City Financial held over $5.4 billion in assets. This video tells the full story: Abraham Belzberg's 1919 journey from Poland to a Calgary furniture store; the $500,000 that started the Simon Wiesenthal Center; the 1981 Bache fight and the greenmail label; Scovill, Yale and NuTone, bought for $523 million; Pennsylvania's April 1990 antitakeover law; the June 1991 meeting and a $2.3 billion workout; Gibralt and The Keg. It ends where the story stands now — the Belzberg Library at SFU, Action Canada, and a dystonia foundation still funding research fifty years on.
