Description
It is past midnight on a flight line in the Mekong Delta. A horn rips you awake and a voice says three words: Scramble the Seawolves. Within three minutes you are airborne over a black river in a helicopter the Army did not want anymore, flying toward sailors pinned down and bleeding in the dark.
This is HA(L)-3, the Seawolves, the only helicopter gunship squadron the U.S. Navy ever put in the field. Built from worn-out Army Hueys to protect the river patrol boats and SEALs of Operation Game Warden, scattered across nine detachments and the decks of old landing ships, firing within twenty meters of their own men. Lt. Cdr. Allen Weseleskey flying back in alone for Jack Jacobs, a rescue that nearly got him court-martialed and earned him the Navy Cross instead. 44 killed in action. Born in Vietnam and dissolved there, never once based at home. Every claim sourced.
