Description

Former British Home Secretary Claims That Being "English" Is Inherited, Not Acquired — Do You Agree or Disagree? The Battle of Black & Brown People Fighting to Be English (British) Sparked Outrage on BBC This episode of BBC Question Time features Suella Braverman, the former British Home Secretary. She generated quite a stir during the show, with nearly everyone criticising her. Upon closer reflection, I couldn't find any major faults in her statements, except for her answer to the question of whether only white people can be English, to which she replied no. I, however, would argue that the answer is yes, exempting mixed-race people where one parent is English. The term "English" can refer to both the nationals of England and ethnic English people. Being born, raised, and living in England does not make someone English as an ethnicity, which is why I don't agree with the jus soli nationality rule. You can have English/British nationality but not be of English ethnicity. In this reactionary video, I explored experiences in Africa and around the world and connected them to Suella Braverman's position. Please share your thoughts in the comments section.
