Today, having a job usually means having a specific profession, working certain hours, receiving a salary, and answering to an employer. But thousands of years ago, humans were already developing surprisingly complex systems of work.
In this video, we travel back to ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Rome to discover what people actually did for a living, from farmers, builders, metalworkers, merchants, and potters to scribes, doctors, soldiers, and specialized craftsmen.
We'll explore how the rise of cities created new professions, why some of the world's earliest written records were connected to accounting and economic activity, and how ancient workers could receive food and supplies instead of a modern paycheck.
We'll also look at the workers of Deir el-Medina in ancient Egypt, where specialized craftsmen worked on royal tombs, received rations, had organized workplaces, and even participated in one of history's earliest recorded labor strikes.
But ancient work wasn't always voluntary.
We'll also explore the role of enslaved labor, government workers, merchants, apprentices, and skilled craftsmen, and how dramatically the ancient labor system differed from the modern world.
Today, we can apply for jobs online, receive digital paychecks, work remotely, freelance, change careers, and specialize in incredibly narrow professions.
Ancient humans had none of that.
But they still had something surprisingly familiar: people with specialized skills working together to keep increasingly complex societies alive.
So when did a "job" actually become a job?
And how different was the working life of an ancient Egyptian craftsman, Mesopotamian scribe, or Roman merchant from the working world we know today?
Let's go back thousands of years and find out.
