Description

This easy homemade pie crust is my Grandma’s original recipe, made the old-fashioned way—with lard. ❤️ If you’ve never baked with lard before, don’t let it scare you! Lard has long been used for pie pastry because it makes a beautifully tender, flaky crust. This is also the crust Grandma used for her famous sweet potato pies. While her exact sweet potato pie filling recipe was unfortunately lost over the years, her pie crust recipe survived, and I’m so happy to share this little piece of our family history with you. This recipe makes enough pastry for two 9-inch pie crusts—perfect for two single-crust pies or a double-crust pie. 🥧 Grandma’s Classic Lard Two-Crust Pie Pastry Ingredients 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon granulated sugar ⅔ cup lard, very cold 5 tablespoons ice-cold water, or more as needed Directions 1. Whisk the flour, salt, and sugar together in a bowl. Cut in the cold lard using a pastry blender/cutter or knife until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. 2. Add the ice-cold water 1 tablespoon at a time, gently blending with a fork or pastry blender until the flour is moistened and the dough almost cleans the sides of the bowl. 3. Divide the dough in half and shape each half into a flattened round disk. Wrap tightly in plastic and refrigerate for at least 1 hour before using. Make Ahead: The wrapped pie dough can be refrigerated for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 3 months. And keep one of those crusts handy because in my next video, I’ll be using Grandma’s pie crust to make my Southern Sweet Potato Pie! If your mother, grandmother, or someone else in your family made their pie crust with lard, let me know in the comments. I’d love to hear about it. Until next time… may your kitchen always feel like a hug from Grandma. #PieCrust #LardPieCrust #HomemadePieCrust #SouthernCooking #OldFashionedRecipes #HuggedByGrandma if you are interesting in watching my video for the sweet potato pie, click link below https://youtu.be
