Description
Congress just passed a Social Security bill, and it gets rid of three words on every Social Security letter you've ever opened: "full retirement age." The Claiming Age Clarity Act passed the House on December 1, 2025 and the Senate, with no objection, on September 29, 2026. It's now on the President's desk. It doesn't change your check or your retirement age — but it changes the words Social Security uses to describe the biggest money decision most Americans make.
WHAT CHANGES (the new words)
• Age 62: "early eligibility age" becomes "minimum monthly benefit age"
• Age 67 (born 1960 or later): "full retirement age" becomes "standard monthly benefit age"
• Age 70: becomes the "maximum monthly benefit age" — "delayed retirement credits" won't be used anymore
• When: by January 1, 2027, or one year after the President signs, whichever comes later
WHAT DOESN'T CHANGE
• Your retirement ages, your benefit amount, your yearly raise (announced October 14), and Medicare at 65.
THE NUMBERS
• On a $2,000 standard benefit: about $1,400 a month at 62, $2,000 at 67, $2,480 at 70 — for life.
• Waiting until 70 instead of 62 catches up at about age 80 (before raises and interest).
• 2026 earnings limit if you claim early and keep working: $24,480 ($1 held back for every $2 over); $65,160 in the year you reach your standard age ($1 for every $3).
IF YOU'VE ALREADY CLAIMED
• Nothing changes. You don't need to do anything.
• Within 12 months of claiming: you can withdraw (Form SSA-521) — you repay what you received, once in a lifetime.
• At your standard age: you can suspend your check and earn 8% a year until 70.
• Married: the surviving spouse keeps the bigger of the two checks.
SCAM WARNING
This law requires nothing from you. Nobody from Social Security will call to "update your retirement age." Hang up.
