Description

The IRS has started mailing a letter called a CP321J notice about the new Saver's Match. Starting with money you save in 2027, the government adds 50 cents for every dollar you put into a retirement account — up to $1,000 a year, or $2,000 for a married couple. Here are the three rules that decide who really gets it, the mistake in the video going around about Social Security, and the one rule that keeps most retirees from this money. WHAT TO KNOW • The letter: CP321J from the IRS, sent to people who claimed the Saver's Credit on their 2025 tax return or whose 2025 income was in range. No reply needed. • The match: 50% of up to $2,000 a year you save in a 401(k), 403(b) or IRA, so up to $1,000 per person, deposited into your account. It starts with 2027 savings; the first deposits arrive in 2028. You claim it on your 2027 tax return (Form 8880-A). • Rule 1: you need earned income (a paycheck or your own work). Social Security and pensions don't count. • Rule 2: the full match goes up to $20,500 of income if you're single, $41,000 married filing jointly, $30,750 head of household. No match above $35,500 / $71,000 / $53,250. Only the taxed part of your Social Security counts. • Rule 3: money taken out of retirement accounts in 2025, 2026, 2027 and until your 2027 return is due reduces your savings for the match — required minimum distributions included. Direct rollovers don't count. • You have to file a 2027 tax return to get it, even if you normally don't file. • TrumpIRA.gov: a government list of low-fee private IRAs, opening January 1, 2027. • Scams: the IRS doesn't call or text to hand out money. There's no fee and no application except your own tax return.
