This is what those six minutes could look like in San Diego, California. 10:00 AM, a clear October morning. Two hundred miles west of San Diego the sea bulges and a submarine-launched ballistic missile climbs out of the Pacific. On a Navy destroyer a radar operator sees the track before anyone else. The warning spreads in minutes. General quarters on the ships. A radio call to the park rangers on Point Loma. A National Alert on every phone in the city. On Mission Beach the lifeguards clear the sand. In the Gaslamp Quarter people run down into the parking garages. At Naval Air Station North Island the hangar doors close on the carriers. At the airport every departure is put on hold. "Impact, San Diego. Sixty seconds." On the Cabrillo overlook a ranger shouts the only order left: get down behind the wall. No narrator, no explanation. Only the cameras that were there. This is a fictional scenario. The people are invented and no country is named. The distances, timings and procedures follow public sources on missile warning and civil defense, so you can see how much warning a coastal city really gets.
