This film imagines the day it stops being quiet, hour by hour, through the eyes of the people who were there. 8:47 AM, a cold February morning in ski season. On a groomed run on Mammoth Mountain the ground jolts, and a crack opens across the snow and starts to steam. At the USGS volcano observatory, seismologist Leah Whitaker watches an earthquake swarm fill her screens: shallow, right under the town. 9:20 AM, a magnitude 5.8 shakes Main Street. Snow slides off the roofs, car alarms go off, and the alert level goes to WATCH. At Hot Creek the pools boil over and a steam blast throws water and mud into the air. Deputy Marcus Hale walks down Main Street with a megaphone: mandatory evacuation, take the Scenic Loop to US 395. Tom Moreno throws the bags in the car while his daughter Jess keeps filming. Then the ground tilt goes off the scale, and the USGS goes to WARNING. 10:52 AM, on US 395, people step out of their cars as a new vent tears open on the flank of Mammoth Mountain. The eruption column climbs above the peak, lightning flickers inside it, and volcanic bombs start to fall on the highway. On the Mammoth Scenic Loop people abandon their cars and run. In town the sky turns from blue to black in a minute. Half an hour later, near Bishop in the Owens Valley, the plume leans east with the wind. Jess lowers her phone. No narrator, no explanation. Only the cameras that were there. This is a fictional volcanic eruption scenario. The people are invented and the eruption never happened. The place, the alert levels and the science follow public USGS sources: Long Valley Caldera is real, and a 2023 Caltech study found that its magma is slowly cooling, so a supereruption is not expected, while smaller eruptions are still possible. In The Day Yellowstone Erupted, the biggest volcano in America wakes up. Watch it here: https://youtu.be/GQrun_KqcPk Made with Seedance 2.5 on Higgsfield, edited in Premiere Pro and After Effects. Music: "Impact Point" and "Only Us" — Hampus Naeselius (Epidemic Sound). Sound effects: Epidemic Sound and ElevenLabs. If an eruption warning came for your town, how far would you get in the first hour? Tell me in the comments. ──────────────────────── AI VIDEOS 26 Cinematic AI films: disaster simulations, future scenarios and visual experiments. Join 30,000+ viewers.
