Description

Buckingham Palace has 775 rooms, among them 19 State Rooms, 52 principal bedrooms, 188 staff bedrooms, 92 offices and 78 bathrooms. It began as a brick town house built in 1703 for the Duke of Buckingham, and by 1828 John Nash had spent £496,169 turning it into a palace for George IV, who died before he could live in it. William IV offered it to Parliament instead. When Queen Victoria moved in on 13 July 1837, it had stood empty for seven years. In June 2026, with a £369 million refit nearly done, officials confirmed the King would not move in. Subscribe to the channel: @lostgrandeuruk In this video, we talk about what every one of those rooms was built for, including the mulberry garden and the Queen's House of George III and Queen Charlotte, Nash's overspend and dismissal, William IV's attempt to give the palace away, Victoria's smoky first home and the boy Jones on the throne, her 1845 letter to Sir Robert Peel, the East Wing and balcony paid for by stripping the Brighton Pavilion, the 1856 Ballroom, the nineteen State Rooms, the secret mirror door in the White Drawing Room, the Belgian Suite and its royal guests, the household of hundreds and the 92 offices, the wartime bombing of the chapel, the 100 miles of hidden cabling, and King Charles's decision to stay at Clarence House. 🔔 Subscribe for more of Britain's great houses and the people who built them, lived in them and left them. 💬 Comment where you're watching from, and tell me which of the palace's 775 rooms you would most like to walk into. 📢 Share this with anyone who has ever stood at the palace railings, on Facebook, Reddit or in your group chats.
