The Cadbury Dynasty: How a Quaker Family Built Britain's Chocolate Empire, Then Lost It
Subscribe to the channel: @LostGrandeurUK
In 1861 the Cadbury chocolate business had shrunk to 11 employees, and George Cadbury saved it with £4,000 from his mother's legacy. By 1899 it employed 2,600 people, and by 1900 the Quaker family had built Bournville, a village of 313 houses on 330 acres with no public house anywhere in it. A century later the family held less than 1% of the company. In 2010 Kraft bought Cadbury for £11.5bn, having written five times that it believed it could keep the Somerdale factory open. One week after taking control, it confirmed the closure.
