Description
In February 1862, the 20-year-old Prince of Wales spent about two hours looking over a neglected Norfolk shooting box and paid £220,000 for it. By 1900 his guests were shooting more than 20,000 birds a year, every clock on the estate ran 30 minutes fast, and royal trains had pulled into the tiny station at Wolferton hundreds of times. In the 1891 census, 41 percent of the adults on the estate came from outside the local area, and 26 grooms and coachmen slept in dormitories above the horses. Meanwhile the widow farming Appleton's 900 acres was forbidden to shoot the hares eating her crops. And on a January night in 1936, the King's doctor decided for himself what hour that King would die.
