Description

📖 My mother's whole way of running a house is written down in one book, The Old Mexican Way: https://oldmexicanway.com And before anybody feels bad: none of this is your fault. At Aldi nearly everything has the same plain label, so everything looks like the bargain, and nobody taught you that looking cheap and being cheap are two different things. The 10 we buy, counting down: 10. La limpieza: vinegar, bleach, dish and laundry soap. Bleach is bleach. You were paying for the drawing of the lemon 9. Los frijoles y el arroz: close to warehouse prices, and no card, no membership 8. La fruta congelada: frozen fruit for the licuados. Fresh strawberries are a romance, frozen ones are a marriage 7. Los huevos: open the carton in the aisle, look at all twelve, turn the bottom row 6. Las latas: the little can of tomato sauce that makes the rice red 5. Las especias: the one spice jar my mother would have forgiven, and where I still buy the everyday ones 4. Las tortillas: the thirty second comal test before you trust a new pack 3. La crema y el queso: stock up on the block, buy the queso fresco for this week only 2. Lo de hornear: the baking aisle in October, for pan de muerto, polvorones, buñuelos and the rosca 1. Los especiales del miércoles: number one is not a thing, it is a day The 5 we never touch: 1. The aisle in the middle: if you did not need it on Tuesday, you do not need it on Wednesday 2. Meat that is not on special: the meat follows the flyer, not the calendar 3. The famous box that is not the famous box: the look alike is often great, but some are smaller. Read the ounces 4. Produce in the bag you cannot open: turn it over and look at the bottom before you look at the price 5. Anything you did not come in for: five small things you did not need is the price of the chicken you did My mother's question, five words, the same one from the Costco video: will my house finish it. At the warehouse it saves you from the pounds. At Aldi it saves you from the plain little coat. This week, one thing: sit down on Wednesday night the way my mother did. Open the cupboard, the freezer and the back of the refrigerator, write the list against what is already in the house, and let the produce page of the new flyer write your suppers. The honest word: not every Aldi carries our staples, the crema, the queso fresco, the masa, and prices are different in every town. What I give you is what I see in mine. The question does not change. Safety, said plainly: vinegar and bleach never meet in your house. Meat goes into the freezer wrapped tight and dated, and thaws in the refrigerator. Queso fresco does not freeze
