Description

When the casting was announced, almost nobody thought it would work. Heath Ledger was the charming Australian from A Knight's Tale, and he'd just been handed the role Jack Nicholson had owned for nineteen years. Even members of the cast assumed it was a mistake. Then he vanished into a hotel room for six weeks with a notebook, building a voice and a laugh from scratch, and showed almost nobody until the cameras were rolling. In this video, we look at what Hollywood legends and fellow actors have said about Heath Ledger — what it was actually like standing across from him on The Dark Knight, why the cast says he forced all of them to raise their game, and how the same actor delivered Brokeback Mountain and the Joker within three years of each other. Michael Caine has spent nearly twenty years telling the story of the first day he saw the character. Christian Bale sat on the other side of an interrogation table. Maggie Gyllenhaal couldn't bring herself to look at him. Gary Oldman, Aaron Eckhart, Morgan Freeman and Christopher Nolan all watched it happen. Six actors have played the Joker on film. For a lot of people the argument ended in 2008. For everyone else it's still running. So how good was Heath Ledger really? Here's what the biggest names in Hollywood have to say. ⏱️ TIMESTAMPS 00:00 - Intro [fill in] 🎬 Subscribe for more Hollywood interviews, actor reactions, and untold stories from behind the scenes. 💬 Who played the best Joker?
