Description

3 Appalachian Rangers Refused to Go Back After What Answered Them in the Cave Three backcountry rangers asked off the same route, each on his own, and each because something in a gated cave had answered him. The first one flashed his headlamp into the dark and something flashed back — then again, brighter, and lower in the passage, closer to the bars. The second one wrote a joke in the register inside a locked gate and found a reply in old-fashioned penmanship the next time the tube was opened. I went in knowing both of those things and told no one. I turned my lamp off for the dusk count, and a tired man's voice asked me a question from the dark behind the bars. I answered it before I could stop myself. I'll tell you what I can explain about that cave — the history, the science, the reasons a mind can talk itself into almost anything underground. Then I'll tell you what I found in the register on my last visit, dated the same night I was there, written in that same slanted hand.
