3 Appalachian Animal Signs The Old Folks Taught Me Never To Ignore (One Almost Killed A Hiker)
Three animal signs the old people I grew up around taught me never to walk past. A wild animal that doesn’t run from you — and the precise difference between a healthy fox crossing your trail and the one that kept walking toward a family of four in Virginia until it had to be stopped and tested positive for rabies. The cucumber smell and the warm rocks, which is mountain lore that got the where exactly right and the how partly wrong, and whose real lesson might have saved my hand the afternoon I reached toward a fieldstone wall in fading light. And the raked beech bark, which is the one that matters most and the one most people don’t know to read. That last one: a sixteen-year-old pulled from his hammock with his food hung properly. A forty-nine-year-old thru-hiker with his tent torn open and his food on the cables where it belonged. And a young man on a creek flat who laughed when I told him to move. I came back at first light. That’s the one I can only partly explain, because the old woman who sent me to that creek that morning had said boy, and she had said creek, and I hadn’t told her where I was going — because that morning I didn’t know.

Six people living hidden in these mountains — from the sisters who held out when a national park grew up around them, to a stone springhouse with a perfect, unchanging boundary I stopped visiting after dark.

Five gut feelings the old mountain people taught you never to push through — four with a science explanation, and one from a ridge I knew for fifteen years where I walked a compass bearing twice and came out at the same rhododendron both times.

Five zones on the AT — one closed by federal law, one that kept a killer’s memory for twenty-seven years, one a hundred miles from help, one poisoned for a century, and one in Vermont where boot tracks end in fresh snow with nothing around them.
