Description

Your husband dies on a Tuesday. The joint account does not freeze. The money is yours that same afternoon, with no court and no lawyer. Then the government reaches into that same account and pulls a payment back out of it, and it does not ask which half was yours. If you already spent that money on the electric bill, you now owe it personally. That is the part nobody explains. The account survives him. Four other things do not, and three of them are gone before the first month is over. In this video: the Social Security payment for the month he died and why the bank takes it out of the whole account, the credit card in your purse that closes the day he dies, the pension choice that may have been signed away with your own signature and can sometimes be challenged, and the one word on your signature card that decides whether any of the rest of this is true for you. This is education, not financial, tax or legal advice. Your own bank, your own state and the exact wording on your paperwork can change the answer. Ask them before you act on any of it.
