Description

Japan has the shortest average sleep among rich countries: about 7 hours 22 minutes a day (OECD data). Yet many viral videos call "sleep less, wake up fresh" a Japanese secret. In this video, Priya (who sleeps 5 hours and drinks 3 coffees a day) and her Japanese colleague Haruka go through 5 sleep myths and the habits that actually help, with the real research behind each one. In this video: • Why short sleep in Japan is a problem, not a secret (Japan's health ministry sleep guide asks adults for at least 6 hours) • Sleep debt: how 1 hour short for 5 nights adds up • Myth 1: Japanese people need less sleep • Myth 2: napping at work means lazy (inemuri, "sleeping while present") and the 26-minute NASA pilot nap study • Myth 3: coffee fixes sleep debt • Myth 4: sleeping in on Sunday pays it all back • Myth 5: you need exactly 8 hours (3 questions to check your own sleep) • The habits that work: same wake-up time, morning daylight, a light early dinner, dim lights and phone away • Bonus: the 5-minute bedtime to-do list (Baylor University study) Please note: this video is for awareness only and is not medical advice. It does not tell you to sleep less. If you snore loudly, wake up gasping, or feel very sleepy all day even after 7 hours in bed, please see a doctor. Priya's two-week result is a story, not scientific proof. Sources: OECD Gender Data Portal (average sleep time, 2019 and 2021 editions); Japan Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, Sleep Guide for Health Promotion 2023; Brigitte Steger (University of Cambridge) on inemuri; Rosekind and colleagues, NASA Technical Memorandum (1995, long-haul pilots, nap study); Scullin and colleagues, Journal of Experimental Psychology: General (2018, Baylor University and Emory University, bedtime writing study, 57 students). Which of these 5 myths did you believe? And how many hours do you really sleep? Tell us in the comments. #JapaneseSleep #SleepTips #SleepDebt
