Description
Lakshmi and Padma live on the same lane, stitch blouses on the same kind of machine and earn the same 12,000 rupees a month. Three years later one of them has a second machine and money in a steel tin, and the other asks the neighbours for 500 rupees at the end of every month. The difference is one small question that an 80-year-old chit-fund keeper, Subbamma, gives both of them on the same day. This story shows what happens next, and why Japan's 100-year-old household ledger, Kakeibo, teaches the same rule: savings first, spending after.
Please note: this is a story told for awareness. It is not investment or financial advice and it makes no promise about returns. Save an amount that suits your own budget.
Sources: Hani Motoko and the Kakeibo household ledger (1904, published through the magazine that became Fujin no Tomo); the "pay yourself first" saving habit, a widely taught general budgeting principle
